Passion Flower Vine or Krishna Kamal is somehow connected to both Sanatan and Christian believes and faiths that’s why people are more curious to grow this alluring plant. 

It is believed that in the west this flowering plant was named Passionflower plant because the corona of the flower looks similar to the crown of thorns that Jesus wore during the crucifixion.

In Sanatan believes Krishna Kamal is related to Mahabharata. The flower parts represent Pandavas, Kauravas, Draupadi, Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh, and Sudarshan Chakra of Lord Krishna.

Passion flower plant can be woody to herbaceous and is mostly tendril bearing vines that produces regular flowers. There are about 550 species of flowering plants in the Passiflora genus.

They are found and grows very well in Southeast Asia, Central America, South America, Mexico, the United States, and Oceana.  


How To Grow Passion Flower Vine?

Growing Season: Spring to late-summer is the ideal time to grow this flowering plant. In winters it may die back to the ground and grows again in spring from their existing roots in the soil.

Selection Of Pot: For growing Krishna Kamal select a medium-sized earthen or cemented container with at least 3 to 4 drainage holes to remove excess water from the soil in the pot. You can also grow this plant directly in the soil for much better growth of vines.

Although if you care well then it grows very well in pots. I have been growing Krishna Kamal in an earthen pot and it is doing well.

Potting Mix: Prepare potting mix with 30% normal garden soil + 30% any organic compost + 40% cocopeat or river sand. Mix it thoroughly and our the mixture in the pot. 

Take care that the soil pH must be around 6.5 to 7.2 i.e. nearly neutral soil. You can also mix a 5% biozyme to your potting mix.



Passion Flower Plant Propagation

You can either purchase this plant directly from the nearest plant nursery or you can grow this plant from seeds, cuttings or air layering. I will suggest you to directly purchase this plant from the nursery and then transplant it in the pot or ground.

Transplantation: Transplant the new plant by filling your container with potting mix and spread the roots of the new plant on the top layer of the soil horizontally and then fill a two-inch layer of potting mix over the root.

Gently press around the base of the Krishna Kamal plant to fix it properly in the soil. Water your pot after transplanting and keep it in semi-shade for at least 7 days.

Sunlight: Passion flower vine grows well in full sunlight. Place your pot in the area where it can receive at least 6 to 7 hours of sunlight. But protect this plant in extreme summer. If the temperature goes about 37 degrees Celsius then provide shade to this plant.

Watering: Water your plants only when the top layer seems dry. Passion flower vine loves adequate moisture to grow. Take care of waterlogging condition in the pot, hence do not apply excess of water in the pot. While watering avoid wetting of leaves.

However, during hot summer days, you can mist your plant during early mornings. Keep the soil evenly moist but not soggy.

Fertilizers: This plant needs fertilizer from the beginning of spring season. Apply one teaspoon of 19:19:19 NPK with 3 to 4 granules of DAP once at the beginning of the spring season.

If you want to grow completely organically then apply one to two handful of vermicompost with banana peel fertilizer.

After the first application, you can apply balanced NPK again after a one-month interval till the end of the summer season. Do not need to add fertilizers in the winter season.

If you are using organic fertilizers like vermicompost along with banana peel fertilizer then add the same amount after every one month. Stop fertilizing during winters as at this time krishna kamal goes under dormancy.

Pruning: Passion flower plant doesn’t need much pruning. Just keep removing dead and diseased leaves of the plant regularly to maintain the good shape of the vines.
