Introduction
Morning glory is not only a name to a particular plant. But it is a common name for more over 1000 species of flowering plants belonging to the family Convolvulaceae. People living in east and south Asia grow this plant for ornamental as well as for culinary purposes.
Morning glory is a perennial flowering plant in tropical climate. But you can also grow them in colder or temperate climate as annuals. However, there are few species that only grow as annuals.
Morning glory has also many cultural significance. They represents love, peace, royality, nobility etc. depending on the flower colour. Flower are of varying shades from white, red, pink to purple in colour. In Chinese tradition, it symbolizes that lovers can only meet on one day of the year. Moreover it has medicinal uses too.
How To Grow Morning Glory?
You can start growing morning glory by sowing seeds. However you need to be aware about sunlight, watering, fertilizers, potting mix, etc. Just like us, plants also require favourable condition to grow. And this article will help you to create favourable condition for your plant to grow.
Growing Season
You can start growing morning glory in plant hardiness zones 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10. However, spring season is best for sowing of morning glory seeds. Generally they grow very well in tropical to sub-tropical climate.
Morning glory starts blooming from summer to late fall season. Sometimes it can continue blooming during winters. It happens at places where winters are not very cool.
Potting Mix
Morning Glory plant loves well drained, loamy to sandy loam soil rich in organic matter. Hence if you already have sandy loam soil in the garden then you do not need to worry about potting mix. You can also grow this plant directly in the ground soil.
But if you have heavy or clayey soil then you need to prepare a good potting mix for better growth of the plant. Prepare potting mix with 40% garden soil + 20% river sand + 40% any organic compost. But if you have sandy loam soil then only add organic compost in the soil.
Selection Of Pot
Growing morning glory directly in ground soil can give wonderful result. But if you want to grow in pots then select a 10 to 12 inches pot with at least 2 to 4 drainage holes at the bottom. Drainage holes are very necessary to prevent water logging in the pot.
I prefer selecting earthen or terracotta pots for growing morning glory. This helps to ensure proper aeration in the root zone of the plant.
Propagation
You can propagate morning glory either by seeds or by cuttings. From seeds you can start propagation during spring season. But it will take around 120 days to produce flowers. Another way to propagate them is through cutting during late summer or rainy season.
From Seeds
You can use the same potting mix for sowing of seeds. Select a germination tray or any pot with drainage holes at the bottom. Fill the germination container with potting mix. Sow seeds at a distance of 2 to 3 inches from each other. And cover it with a thin layer of potting mix.
Apply water gently in the germination container. Make sure that the excess water gets drained out. Germination of morning glory seeds occurs best at atmospheric temperature ranging from 25 to 35 degrees Celsius.
Keep the pot in the area where it can receive bright indirect sunlight. Keep maintaining adequate moisture in the pot. After 7 days you will notice the growth of new seedlings. Once the seedlings have 3 to 4 true leaves then you can transplant them in the main pot. Prepare a fresh potting mix and transplant them.
Morning Glory Care Guide
Well do you think its over. Ha Ha Ha, not yet. Once a baby is born, to grow it into a young healthy adult you require to take care as a plant parent. But morning glory is an easy to care for plant. Hence you can relax a bit.
Although knowing about sunlight, watering, fertilizers, etc. requirements will help you to get best results.
Sunlight
Morning glory plant enjoys bright direct sunlight for 5 to 6 hours daily to grow and prosper. But prevent your plant from heavy wind flow. Morning glories are vines, you can give support by fence or trellis to climb.
Make sure to keep the direction of the plant towards sunlight. Sunlight helps to improve plant growth.
Watering
Moderate watering is good for this beautiful flowering plant. I do not consider fixed frequency for watering because climatic conditions can differ. The best method to apply water is when you notice the top soil becoming dry.
Apply good amount water and make sure to take care of drainage holes too. Water logging can cause root rot. And it can harm your plant. That’s why avoid excess watering.
Fertilizers
Morning glory is not a heavy feeder plant. Also avoid adding excess of nitrogen rich fertilizers. During early growth stages you can feed with one to two handful of organic compost once after every 30 days. You can use vermicompost or leaf manure for this purpose.
To get heavy blooming during summer to fall season, you can use banana or onion peel fertilizers. However I will suggest to avoid adding many types of fertilizer at once. Make sure to keep interval of at least 20 to 30 days.
Pests & Diseases
Although morning glory is not prone to pests and diseases. But in severe cases aphids, spider mites, leaf miners, fungal leaf spots, or fusarium wilt can disturb or damage your plant. To prevent any flying pest you can also use yellow sticky traps.
