When agriculture is considered the backbone of the economy and has played a crucial role in the development of civilization, could you imagine a country without agriculture? Well, exceptions can be found anywhere. We have 195 countries on our beautiful Earth, out of which around five countries practice zero to limited agriculture.
This doesn’t mean that these countries are backward or face issues; rather, various factors contribute to the limited practice of agriculture. Some of the most common factors include limited farmland, desert climate, low rainfall, and arctic conditions. These countries import agricultural products from others to fulfill their basic food requirements.
Which Country Has No Agriculture
- Vatican City: The smallest country in the world has virtually no agricultural land due to its extremely small size. It relies on importing agricultural products from others to meet basic food requirements.
- Monaco: With an area of only 2.02 km², Monaco is the second smallest country in the world. To support its urban population, it imports almost all of its food.
- Qatar: A wealthy country, this desert nation suffers from extremely arid conditions and water scarcity. Although it has adopted hydroponics and aeroponics systems, it still relies on importing agricultural products to meet most of its food needs.
- Singapore: A highly urbanized island nation with limited land area of about 728 km² imports food to support its population. It has started promoting urban farming, but a large portion of its food requirements is still fulfilled through imports.
- Greenland: Due to arctic climate, permafrost, and ice-covered land only greenhouses are used to cultivate limited crops.
