What is animal Husbandry?

Animal husbandry is made up of two words, “Animal” and “Husbandry.” You all must be knowing the meaning of the word animal. Animals are those organism that are multicellular, eukaryotic and are from the animal kingdom.

But not all the animals can be captivated or give us products that can be beneficial directly for the humans. Here come use of the second word “Husbandry.” In simple words husbandry means cultivation, management and production.

Animal Husbandry means rearing, cultivation, management and production of animals that can be domesticated under controlled human captivation to get useful products such as milk, eggs, honey, fur, fibres, meat, etc.

It is a branch of agriculture in which we study all the aspects related to domestication, rearing, selection and breeding of livestock. It also includes day to day care of domesticated animals.

You should not get confused between animal husbandry, livestock and domesticated animals. Let me make it very clear for you. We call livestock to a group of domesticated animals that are raised in a well settled farm to produce milk, meat, eggs, etc.

While all domesticated animals doesn’t need to be called as a livestock, like dog, we don’t domesticate dog for its product, we have dogs in our house for protection and friendly behaviour.

And not all the animals can be domesticated, like we can not domesticate lioness to have milk. It will be quite dangerous. We only domesticate those animals that can easily come under human control and can add some value to our life.
