Severe Thunderstorm Watch Issued Across D.C., Maryland, & Virginia: Damaging Winds & Flash Flood Expected

The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Northern Virginia. The watch will remain in effect until 9:00 PM ET on Tuesday, July 2, 2025. Residents are advised to prepare for severe weather conditions including damaging winds, heavy rainfall, lightning, and even for tornadoes.

Areas Affected

  • District of Columbia
  • St. Mary’s County and Calvert County, Maryland
  • Northern Virginia counties including Fairfax, Arlington, and Loudoun

A tornado warning was temporarily issued earlier for St. Mary’s County and Calvert County, and urged residents to take immediate shelter. However, it expired at 8:15 PM ET, but officials caution that conditions remain volatile.





Weather Threats and Hazards

According to the NWS Storm Prediction Center, the Mid-Atlantic region is under a “Slight Risk” for severe weather. The following hazards are expected throughout the evening:

  • Damaging wind exceeding 60 mph
  • Frequent cloud-to-ground lightning
  • Flash flooding, particularly in low-lying and urban areas
  • Isolated tornadoes can be seen

The public is advised to:

  • Avoid outdoor activities till situation becomes normal
  • Stay indoors & away from windows and gates
  • Charge mobile devices in case of power outages
  • Monitor updates from NWS or local news sources
