How Tomato Seeds Grow?
Many buyers purchasing seeds from online stores often face problem with germination of seeds. There can be lot of factors determining the success rate. Generally seed quality, temperature, moisture, growing medium, correct procedure and a little blend of gardener’s love help in seed germination.
No one can guarantee 100% success rate with seed germination on this planet, but if you follow these steps correctly then you can have 70 to 90% germination rate. Moreover even after successful germination you need to take proper care of the seedlings for healthy growth and development of the tomato plant.
If you are living in temperate or cold regions where summer are not so hot then you can grow tomato seeds during spring season, i.e. from February to March. But if you are living in tropical regions with hot summers then you can sow seeds of this plant from June to November. Ideal temperature range for tomato seeds germination is between 18 to 27 degree Celsius.
Select germination tray or earthen pots with drainage holes at the bottom. Fill tray or pot with 40% cocopeat + 20% river sand + 40% any organic compost like vermicompost. Leave some space at the top for watering.
Sowing Of Seeds
Sow 1 to 2 seeds in each column of the germination tray and cover it with a thin layer of prepared potting mix. Apply water gently to moist the growing medium evenly. Do not flood the system as it can damage the seeds.
Keep the growing medium evenly moist till seedlings germinate properly. You can also spray a pinch of Epsom salt mixed with water over growing medium for rapid germination once after 2 to 3 days.
Location & Time
Keep the growing medium under semi shade till seedlings germinates. It will take around 10 days for seeds to germinate. Thin out the weak seedlings once they reaches 2 inches height.
