CORIANDER PLANT (CORIANDRUM SATIVUM)

Introduction
Coriander Plant (Coriandrum sativum) is an annual herb in the family Apiaceae. It is also known as Chinese parsley and in the United States the stem and leaves are usually called Cilantro


All parts are edible but the fresh leaves and the dried seeds are the parts most traditionally used in cooking. Coriander plant is native to regions spanning from Europe and Northern Africa to South Western Asia.

It is a soft plant growing to 18- 20 inches tall. The leaves are feathery and variable in shape broadly lobed in the base of the plant. The flowers are borne in small umbels white or very pale pink. The fruit is a globular dry Schizocarp 3-5 mm in diameter.

Selection of seeds

1. You may get coriander seeds from the grocery store during the lockdown period.

2. Purchase seeds from the nearest seed store or online.

3. We suggest buying seeds from a trusted supplier.





Planting and growing season

4. Coriander plant is sown from late March to late September.

5. During summer leaves production decreases and is produced in a small amount.

6. The best months of leaf production are late spring and autumn.





Selection of pots and growing bags

7. If you want to grow in a container, choose a container with 2 feet long 1 foot broad and 10 inches depth.

8. You may grow it in a growing bag (12inch diameter/12-inch depth.)

9. Growing containers should have a good draining system with 2-3 holes.


Sunlight

10. Now place your container where it can receive at least 3-4 hours direct sunlight.

11. During summer place it under partial shed. Where it can receive filtered sunlight.






Preparation of potting mix

12. Make a potting mix with 60% loamy soil + 25% organic compost + 10% coco peat + 5% sand.

13. Now fill the container with a potting mix leaving a 1-inch distance between the potting mix surface and rim of the container.

Sowing of seeds
14. Seeds are enclosed in a husk. To improve germination you need to crush the seeds gently.

15. For better germination soak seeds in water overnight the day before planting.

16. You may produce seedlings in the germination tray and then transplanting it in pots.

17. The best method of propagation of the coriander plant is through sowing directly in containers or growing bags.

18. Broadcast seeds on the surface of the potting mix and cover seeds with 0.5-1 inches potting mix.

19. Now wet the soil but do not apply excess water.

20. To speed up germination you may cover it with transparent polythene.

21. Keep the soil in the bed consistently moist until seed germination.

22. Seeds take 15-21 days to germinate depending on climatic conditions.

23. When seedlings reach 1-2 inches thin out plants and keep 20 cm space between plants.

24. For a continuous supply of leaves you may practice re-sowing every three weeks.






Water frequency

25. Coriander plants require a good amount of water to grow better.

26. Keep the soil moist constantly. Coriander plant loves moist soil.

27. In peak summer seasons water the Coriander plant twice in a day if pot soil has been completely dried out.

28. Keep in mind that water logging in container may infect your roots.





Fertilizer requirement

29. To establish your young coriander plant use nitrogen-rich fertilizer.

30. Use NPK (10:10:10) ¼ teaspoon per plant in every 15 days.

31. Use one teaspoon dry dust of mustard cake and one teaspoon cow dung manure when the growth of coriander plant slows down.

32. Coriander plant leaves can be harvested when leaves have grown up to 5 or more inches long.

33. You can harvest coriander plant leaves once a week. If the coriander plant grows well, you can harvest more often.

34. Use scissors to harvest leaves by cutting stem one inch above.

35. By doing this you may get extra coriander plant leaves from further growth of plants.

36. Harvest the leaves when they are tender soft and fresh.

37. If coriander plant develops flower remove them immediately, this ensures the plant focus their energy on growing new leaves.

38. In-home garden coriander plant is cultivated for leaves rather than seeds.





Pest management

39. Keep an eye on young plants, they can be attacked by leaf-eating insects.

40. If you notice any eaten leaves of coriander plant, pick them immediately and throw away.

41. Aphids or other pests can be treated by spraying neem oil spray or horticulture oil spray.

42. Use organic fungicide for all the fungal diseases in coriander plant.
