Why Is Stanford Called A Farm?

Stanford University is situated at 450 Jane Stanford Way, Stanford, CA 94305, US and is one of the most prestigious Universities in the world. 

Reason

Stanford University is called the farm because the founders Leland and Jane Stanford built it on their Palo Alto stock farm.

Foundation

It was founded on 11 November 1885  to promote public welfare and education among American youth in memory of their only child, Leland Stanford Jr.

Motive

Moreover, they agreed upon maintaining farmland on university lands to educate people about farming techniques and innovations.  

2014

In 2014, the School of Earth, Energy & Environmental Sciences established the O'Donohue Family Stanford Educational Farm near the University's Red Barn. 

Purpose

It offers academic and experiential learning opportunities. More than 200 varieties of vegetables, flowers, herbs, field crops and fruits are cultivated. 

Importance

Agriculture is the primary activity of humans, to survive we need food, and to produce food we need effective agriculture systems which are developed by scientists, researchers and farmers.
