Almond is not cultivated extensively in India, but farmers are now engaging in the cultivation of almond crops due to high demand and market value.
Globally around 3,214,522 tonnes of almond is produced every year. The United States of America is the largest almond-producing country in the world.
In India around 10,890 tonnes of almond was produced from 2021 to 2022. Slightly warm climatic condition (30 to 35 degrees Celsius) is suitable for almond cultivation.
Jammu & Kashmir is the largest alomnd producing union territory of India. Around 9,930 tonnes of almond (91.26% of total) was produced in this region from 2021-2022.
Himachal Pradesh is the second largest almond producing state in India. Around 950 tonnes of almond (8.73% of the total) was produced from 2021 to 2022.
Maharashtra is the third largest almond producing state in India. Around 10 tonnes of almond (0.09% of the total) was produced from 2021 to 2022.
Other almond-producing states in India are Karnataka, Uttarakhand, Arunachal Pradesh, etc. However, the accurate data of these states are still not recorded.
Most commonly cultivated varieties of almond in India are California paper shell, Shalimar, Nonpareil, Merced, Pranya, Mukhdoom, Drake, Waris, etc.
