Papaya also known as pawpaw is a semi-woody herbaceous perennial tree which produces nutritious sweet and juicy fruits during August to November. Follow these tips to grow papaya tree.
Warm and humid tropical climate is perfect for growing papaya. They can not withstand freezing cold hence avoid growing them in cold temperate climate.
Well drained sandy loam soil rich in organic matter with pH around 6.5 is ideal. Prepare potting mix with 50% garden soil + 40% compost + 10% river sand.
Dwarf variety papaya are best for garden and pots, You can grow Red Lady or Pusa Dwarf variety of Papaya for best results.
Direct sunlight for at least 8 hours daily is essential for better growth and development in papaya plant.
Papaya grows well in moist soil but hates waterlogged soil. Keep the soil medium moist but avoid water logging in the pot.
Use 1/2 teaspoon NPK 10:10:10 in 1 litre water weekly or two handful of leaf compost + onion peel fertilizer + bone-meal after every 15 days.
If you are living in colder climate where winters are freezing then bring papaya plant indoors before first frost date and keep them in indirect sunlight.
