How To Grow & Care For Chinese Lantern

by aditya abhishek

Introduction

Abutilon pictum, also known as the flowering maple or Chinese Lantern, is a popular houseplant known for its attractive foliage and colourful flowers.

Climate

It is native to Brazil, Uruguay &  Argentina & prefers warm temperatures and does best in an environment that ranges between  15.5°C to 23.8°C.

Soil & Potting Mix

Chinese lantern plant can grow in wide range of soils. For best results prepare potting mix with 40% soil + 30% compost + 20% river sand + 10% coco chips.

Sunlight

Bright but indirect light is good. Too much direct sunlight can scorch the leaves. Place your plant near a bright window that receives filtered light.

Watering

Water your flowering mapple when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so make sure the pot has good drainage.

Fertilizers

Once in every 15 days you can apply two handful of dung manure + one tablespoon banana peel fertilizer to promote foliage growth and flowering.

Pruning

Prune your Abutilon pictum regularly to encourage bushier growth and to remove any dead or damaged leaves. You can also pinch back the tips to promote branching.
