At ICAR-National Research Centre on Equines, Bikaner, Rajasthan, scientists have successfully produced a horse foal using frozen semen and Embryo transfer technology.
Scientists have earlier produced foal through embryo transfer, but this is the first time they produced foal by using an admixture of two technologies.
Frozen semen was derived from a suitable stallion and for artificial insemination. On the 7.5th day after ovulation, the embryo was successfully taken out from the inseminated mare.
After flushing, the embryo was located to the suitable estrus-synchronized surrogate mare and care was taken for the healthy growth of the foal.
On 4th October, 2023 the mare delivered a healthy female foal at ICAR-National Research Centre on Equines, Bikaner, Rajasthan. The weight of the foal was 35 Kilograms.
This newly mastered technology in India can be used to multiply superior endangered germplasm and endangered horse races in the country.
Credit for this work goes to Dr. TR Talluri, Sr. Scientist and his team of ICAR-NRC on Equines production. They worked day and night to make this dream come true.
