Why Crop Rotation Considered a Good Agricultural Practice

by aditya abhishek

Introduction

For maintaining soil health, improving yields, & reducing the risks associated with pests, diseases, and nutrient depletion, we need to find ways that are effective.

Systematic rotational pattern of crop species across different fields or plots within a farm instead of cultivating the same species in a particular area every season within a farm is Crop Rotation.

Benefits

Planting leguminous crops such as beans or peas after harvesting cereal crops help in fixing nitrogen in the soil which increases soil fertility.

Cultivating same species of crop result in creating an ideal habitat for pests & diseases that specifically target that crop. By implementing crop rotation, you  can disrupt the lifecycle of pests.

Crop rotation can also help to reduce erosion, improve water quality, & increase biodiversity. Moreover, it also reduces the growth of weeds in the farm.

For a sustainable farming system, practicing crop rotation is a blessing as it helps to solve many problems without any additional inputs. It also helps to reduce external input costs.
