Researchers believe that coffee originated in Ethiopia and made its way north, across the red sea into Yemen in the 15th Century.
A Sufi saint named Baba Budan in the 17th century introduced coffee to India. He smuggled seven beans back to India from Yemen in 1670 .
Baba Budan planted coffee in the Chandragiri hills of Karnataka, India. It was illegal to take coffee seeds out of Arabia at the time
At present, India has become the 8th largest coffee producing country in the world with annual production of 3,74,200 tonnes.
In India, Arabica and Robusta varieties of coffee is grown on a large scale. Out of these two Arabica variety tops the list.
Due to mild aromatic flavor, Arabica coffee has higher market value than Robusta.
In India coffee is not only produced but also exported. India exporsts coffee to many countries, including Italy, Germany, Turkey, Belgium, Russia, etc.
