Use Of The Pesticide Monocrotophos Banned By The Government

The government of India recently banned the use of monocrotophos pesticide through a Gazette Notification dated 29th September, 2023. 

Monocrotophos

Monocrotophos is a water-soluble organophosphate pesticide. It is a controversial pesticide because it is acutely toxic to birds and humans.

Other Pesticides

However, along with monocrotophos, the government of India also banned Dicofol, Dinocap and Methomyl pesticides due to their harmful effects. 

Countries

The use of monocrotophos pesticide is not only banned in India. But other countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, etc. have also banned the use of this pesticide. 

Time Period

Farmers will get a one-year transitional period to adopt other effective alternatives, one such alternative is Beauveria bassiana a biopesticide. 

Sale 

The new production of monocrotophos is banned, and only existing stock of Monocrotophos 36% SL will be allowed for sale for the clearance of the stock.
