Top Onions Producing States In India

Introduction

Onion is the second most produced vegetable crop in the world after tomatoes. In 2021, the global onion production was around 106.59 million metric tonnes. 

Largest Producer

India is the largest producer of onion in the world & accounts for around 24.99% of the total global production. Onions are cultivated on over 1,624,000 hectares of land. 

Other Producers

China is the second largest onion producing country in the world. It is followed by Egypt, United States, Turkey. Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sudan, Indonesia, etc. 

Maharashtra

Maharashtra is the largest onion producing state of India. It contributes about 30.48% of the total annual production which is around 6,656,000 tonnes.  

Madhya Pradesh

Madhya Pradesh is the second largest onion-producing state of India. It contributes about 16.89% of the total annual production which is around 3,687,900 tonnes.  

Karnataka

Karnataka is the third largest onion-producing state of India. It contributes about 11.75% of the total annual production which is around 2,566,430 tonnes.  

Gujarat

Gujarat is the fourth largest onion-producing state of India. It contributes about 5.97% of the total annual production which is around 1,303,070 tonnes.  

Bihar

Bihar is the fifth largest onion-producing state of India. It contributes about 5.72% of the total annual production which is around 1,248,960 tonnes.
