United States of America is the largest proder of corn in the world. Around 384,777,890 tonnes of corn is produced in United States every year.
Temperature ranging from 24 to 36 degrees Celsius is ideal for corn cultivation in America. At tasselling temperature should be 21 to 30 degree Celsius.
Corn grow well in well-drained, fertile soil with a pH between 6.0 & 7.5. Prepare the soil by plowing or tilling to a depth of 6 to 8 inches to create a loose seedbed.
Around 99% of the cultivated corn types in the United States are dent corn or field corn. However, flint corn, flour corn, etc. are also cultivated.
Corn is usually planted from April to May when the soil temperature reaches around 26 to 29 degrees Celsius. Plant the seeds at a depth of about 1.5 to 2 inches.
For higher economic yield, application of 10 tonnes FYM,15 days before sowing supplemented with 180 kg N,80 kg P2O5, 70-80 kg K2O & 25 kg ZnSO4 ha-1 is suggested.
Irrigation should be applied in furrows up to 2/3rd the height of the ridges/beds. Ensure optimum moisture availability during the most critical phase (45 to 65 days after sowing).
Check the kernel milkline, which moves from the crown to the tip of the kernels as they mature. Harvest when the milkline reaches approximately three-quarters of the kernel.
