Cotton has been used in India since 5000 BCE, and its evidence is found in Mehrgarh. Post-colonial period, India has again started gaining importance in cotton production.
According to the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service, India is the second largest cotton producer in the world and accounts for 23% of the world's cotton production.
According to the latest data of PIB, Government of India, Gujarat is the largest producer of cotton in India, followed by Maharashtra, Telangana, Rajasthan, Karnataka, etc.
From 2022-2023, about 91.83 lakh bales of cotton were produced in Gujarat. There has been an increase of about 22.7% from the previous data of 2021-2022.
Major cotton-growing districts in Gujarat are Surendranagar, Amreli, Bhavnagar, Rajkot, Morbi, Saurashtra, Kutch, etc.
During 2021–22, Maharashtra was the leading cotton producer with a total production of 101.05 lakh bales of cotton, but production declined to 80.25 lakh bales in 2022–23.
Telangana is the third-largest cotton-producing state in India. From 2022–23, around 53.25 lakh bales of cotton were produced in the state.
According to PIB, the Government of India, there are a total of 1413 textile mills in India, out of which 770 are in Tamil Nadu, 145 in Andhra Pradesh, and 129 in Maharashtra.
