How To Test Soil pH At Home

by aditya abhishek

Introduction

Soil is one of the most important factor which controls the grow of plants. It provides anchorage, nutrients, water, etc. to the plants.

Soil pH

Soil pH is a measure of how acidic or alkaline the soil is, and it affects the availability of nutrients to your plants. Therefore, it is important to test the pH of your soil regularly.

pH Testing Kit

You can either buy a soil pH testing kit online or you can use these methods to test whether your soil is acidic or alkaline. It will help you in selecting right plants for your soil.

DIY Methods

Collect 2 to 3 soil samples from your garden from a few centimetres below the ground level. Take one cup soil sample from each site. Remove any debris, leaves, insects, etc.

Blending

Blend the collected samples perfectly for getting accurate results. Make sure to collect samples from far distant places of your garden or farm.

Test Acidic Soil

Pour half cup of distilled water in 1 cup of soil sample & mix well. After mixing, add 1/2 cup of baking soda & mix. Presence of bubbles indicate that soil is acidic.

Test Alkaline Soil

Pour half cup of distilled water in 1 cup of soil sample & mix well. After mixing, add 1/2 cup of white vinegar & mix. Presence of bubbles indicate that soil is alkaline.

Test Neutral Soil

Pour half cup of distilled water in 1 cup of soil sample & mix well. If there is no bubble formation after performing both test, then soil is neutral.
