How To Plant, Grow & Care For Euphorbia Milli

Introduction

Euphorbia milli, commonly known as Crown of Thorns, Christ plant or Christ thorns in various part of the world. It is native to Madagascar & is a flowering cacti. 

Christ Thorn

Euphorbia milli is named as Christ thorn because people believe that Jesus Christ worn crown of thorns at his crucifixion. 

Climate

They can not grow in places where temperature remains below 10 degrees Celsius for longer durations. They grow well in hot tropical climates. 

Soil & Potting Mix

Well drainiing sandy soil rich in organic matter is ideal for growing Euphorbia milli. Prepare potting mix with 40% garden soil + 30% compost + 30% perlite. 

Sunlight

You can keep crown of thorns plant under bright direct or indirect sunlight throughout the day. Avoid keeping them in low light condition.

Watering

You should avoid overwatering or waterlogging in the pot as it can cause root rot. Apply water only when top layer of the soil seems dry.

Fertilizers

During active season, i.e., from spring to fall season once after every 30 days keep adding one handful of dung manure + 1 teaspoon bonemeal to promote growth. 

Propagation

During spring season you can take 3 to 6 inches long shoot tip cuttings, wash in water, let it dry under shade for 3 days, dip the bottom end in rooting hormone and plant them.
