Sweet pea or Lathyrus odoratus is an annual, climbing, flowering plant which is native to Sicily, southern Italy and the Aegean Islands. They can grow up to 2 metres.
They love to grow well in cold, dry temperate climates. Avoid growing them in warm & humid climatic conditions.
Well draining, rich and moist, slightly alkaline soil is best. Prepare potting mix with 40% soil + 40% compost + 20% cocopeat + 1 tablespoon wood ash.
Sweet pea flowering plant grow well under bright direct sunlight for at least 8 hours daily. Avoid growing them in shade or low light.
Keep the soil evenly moist but not soggy. Apply water when the top layer of soil becomes dry. Avoid dry spells for longer duration.
They are heavy feeders. Therefore, add 2 to 3 handful of dung manure with onion peel fertilizers once every month to promote good growth & flowering.
You can propagate sweet peas by seeds. Nick the seed coat with a knife and sow them in the soil. Avoid damaging eye while nicking the seed coat.
