How To Grow & Care For Banana Plant

Banana is a herbaceous flowering plant that produces edible berries often mentioned as banana fruits. You can start growing banana plant in at least 15 gallons container. 

Introduction

You can grow banana is warm & humid tropical to sub-tropical climate easily. Temperature ranging from 15 to 35 degrees Celsius is ideal. 

Climate

Banana plant can grow well in wide range of soils. But, well drained, deep, rich loamy soil with good moisture holding capacity is good for banana. 

Soil

Either you can propagate banana from suckers which grows alongside or you can use tissue cultured banana seedlings for planting new banana plant. 

Propagation

At least 6 to 8 hours of bright direct sunlight daily is necessary for ideal growth of banana tree. Avoid growing them in low light condition. 

Sunlight

Keep the soil moist but avoid watering. Do not let the soil dry for longer spells. Add water whenever top layer of soil becomes dry.

Once after every 45 days apply three to four handful of leaf compost or dung manure + 1/2 table spoon bone meal + a pinch of micronutrients for healthy growth. 

Fertilizers

12 to 14 months after plantation you can start harvesting banana fruits. Remove the old banana plant and let the single new sucker grow to harvest again in next season.
