by aditya abhishek

Snails are major pest of farm & garden. They do not cause much harm to larger plants but they surely destroy seedlings completely.  To control snails follow these steps.

Physical Method

Pick snails from the garden and throw them away or dip them in salt water solution. This method is effective only in small area.

If snails are in pot, then transplant your plant in new pot, wash roots before moving. Sun dry soil for  7 days and then you can start planting again.

Cultural Method

Plants like garlic, lavender, and rosemary are known to repel snails, hence you can grow them in your garden and farm to get rid of snails.

Or you can use sugar water or yeast mixture traps in garden to lure and trap snails in them.  You will need a packet of yeast, 2 cups of warm water and one teaspoon of salt and sugar.

Organic Method

You can also use eggshells, coffee grounds, wood ash,  etc,. to control snails. They are also a good source of calcium for plants.

Salt water solution can also be used to control snails. But repeated use can increase soil salinity hence can damage plants. Hence only use this method once or twice.

Inorganic Method

You can broadcast the snail kill i.e. the poison bait (Metaldehyde) @ 25 to 35 Kilograms per hectare. This is the most effective method to get rid of snails.
