Hosta also known as Plantain lilies is genus of shade tolerant hardy perennial houseplants that are native to northeast Asia. You can grow them indoors by following these tips.
You can grow varieties of hosta such as Sieboldiana, Golden Tiara, Halcyon, Sun Power, Kabitan, Empress Wu, etc. in your garden.
In places where temperature ranges for 35 to -2 degrees Celsius you can grow hosta plant. USDA zones 3 to 9 are suitable for hostas.
Well drained loamy soil rich in organic matter with slightly acidic pH is good. Prepare potting mix with 50% garden soil + 30% compost + 20% cocopeat.
During spring season, you can propagate hosta by division. Take out crown along with roots and plant them in a new pot.
Blue leaved hostas can grow well in indirect sunlight but other varieties need full sunlight to grow well.
Keep the soil evenly moist all the time but avoid waterlogging in the pot. Dry spells for longer duration can harm this plant.
From spring to fall, add a handful of leaf compost or 1 tablespoon tea leaf compost once every month. For flowering variety also use onion peel fertilizer.
