Cumin is a spice that is derived from the dried seeds of a plant called Cuminum cyminum. Although India is the largest producer of cumin, it did not originate here.
Researchers believe that cumin originated in Western Asia, somewhere around Egypt & the Middle East.
At present India is the largest producer of cumin in the world & accounts for 70% of the total global production.
Cumin is widely used in cooked foods in India, North Africa, Mexico & Mediterranean to add warmth & earthiness flavour to the food.
Cumin seeds are rich in antioxidants that are known to neutralize free radicals. These free radicals can cause cell damage in our body.
Thus it helps in preventing diseases such as cancer, high blood pressure, etc. Moreover, cumin seeds promotes digestion, help treating blood sugar, etc.
But, it doesn't mean that you should start consuming them in excess. The reccomended doze is 300 to 600 milligrams per day.
