First Flower That Bloomed In Space!

by aditya abhishek

Life on space has always been a matter of deep interest for humans on earth. we have started exploring space since ages but launch of Sputnik on 4th October, 1957 was a milestone in journey to space.

Our collaborative efforts resulted in landing of humans on moon for the very first time at At 02:56 GMT on 21 July 1969.

But if we want to make life sustainable in space then we should look out ways to grow plants successfully for providing astronauts consistent supply of fresh food.

On 16th November, 2015 Astronaut Kjell Lindgren started flowering crop experiment by initiating veggie system and rooting "pillows" that had zinnia seeds.

Veggie team from Earth sent one page guidelines on how to grow and care for zinnia plants to the astronauts in space growing zinnia plants  in front of them.

Because of hard efforts of astronauts and the veggie team zinnia plant grew well in space and bloomed for the first time on 12th January, 2017

Till now we have grown rice, tulips, bok choy, onions, peas, radishes, wheat, lettuce, garlic, potato, cucmber, sunflower, cabbage, etc. in space.
