Whether you are a gardener or a farmer, practcing companion planting can help in reduction of external input cost and increasing crop productivity.
Mosquito plants that fixes nitrogen in the soil and blocks light from weeds were planted along with rice in China. This increased production & decreased weed growth.
Even native Americans use to practice "Three Sisters Agriculture" Technique in which they planted Maize, Beans & Squash together to increase crop productivity.
For people actively participating in organic agriculture or gardening, companion planting can be a game changer. It fulfills crop nutrient demand, reduces pest, diseases, & weeds.
Tomato companion plants are Basil, Parsley, Garlic; Cabbage, Fennel, Broccoli; Cowpeas, Cucumbers, Marigolds, Carrots, etc.
Cucumber companion plants are Legumes, Marigold, Sunflower, Corn, Onions, Carrots, etc. Planting 2 to 3 of them together will increase productivity.
Strawberry companion plants are marigold, Lupine, White clover, Spinach, lettuce, peas, beans, onions, garlic, etc.
