Carnation is a popular cut flower crop that you can cultivate in your open or poly house farm to get consistent profit. Follow these points to cultivate carnation successfully.
Cool temperate climate with day temperature of 18-24 degrees C and night temperature of 10-15 degrees C is suitable. Relative Humidity should be around 75%.
Well drained red loam soil is good but it can grow on wide range of soil, soil pH should be around 5.5 to 6.5.
Prepare raised beds of 3 feet width and 45 centimetres height at 45 centimetres interval. Before preparation practice soil fumigation.
Propagate through terminal cuttings of 10 centimetres. Dip for 5 minutes in rooting hormone, plant at on bed tops at 15 x 15 centimetres spacing.
Install drip system for irrigating carnation crop. Have drippers at 30 cm spacing and irrigate @5-6 l/m2/day.
Add 3 grams of ammonium nitrate, NPK(19:19:19), 2.5 grams Magnesium sulphate, and 1 grams of micronutrients & boron weekly in tank A.
In other tank B add 5 grams of potassium nitrate and 8 grams of calcium nitrate weekly but not on same days as tank A
You can start harvesting 120 days after planting. For standard types harvest at paint brush stage.
