Best Soil For Growing Succulents & Cactus

by aditya abhishek

Introduction

Succulents and cacti have unique requirements when it comes to soil and potting mix due to their ability to store water in their leaves, stems, & roots.

Soil

They do not like waterlogged or heavy clayey soil. In waterlogged soil, plants get affected by root rot & die ultimately. You need to grow them in well drained sandy soils.

Sandy Soil Mix

To grow succulents & cacti, you can prepare potting mix by mixing 40% river sand + 40% perlite + 10% cocopeat + 10% leaf compost. It allows good drainage.

Perlite & Sand Mix

You can simply mix 50% river sand + 50% perlite to grow cacti & succulents. However, they will require frequent watering with lesser amount.

With Dried Leaves

You can collect dried leaves from your garden, crush them and mix 20% river sand + 10% perlite + 10% leaf compost to prepare the mixture.

Sand & Cinder

To grow cacti & succulents you can also prepare potting mix by mixing 50% river sand + 50% cinder media. Water gets easily drained from this media.

Pebble Mix

You can also use pebbles or gravels mixed with river sand to grow cactus and succulents. This mix provides excellent drainage and allows air to circulate around the roots.
