The most of available freshwater is used in agriculture, and here are the five most water-intensive crops that use most of the water to give a Kilogram yield.
Cotton is the most water-intensive crop in the world. Black soils are best for cultivating cotton. To grow a kilogram of cotton, around 7,000-29,000 liters of water is required.
To grow a kilogram of rice, around 3,000-5,000 liters of water is required. China is the largest rice-producing country followed by India, Bangladesh, Indonesia, etc.
To grow a kilogram of sugarcane, around 1,500-3,000 liters of water is required. It can be cultivated in a wide range of soils. Sugar and Bagasse are the products of sugarcane.
Soybeans are rich in protein and to grow a kilogram of soybean, around 2,000 liters of water is required. Brazil is the largest producer of soybeans in the world.
Wheat is an important staple crop and to grow a kilogram of wheat, around 900 liters of water is required. China is the largest producer of wheat in the world.
To grow a kilogram of potato, around 500 liters of water is required. The Incas of Peru started cultivating potatoes around 8000 BC to 5000 BC.
