Calendula also known as pot marigold is a winter flowering plant that are famous for their bright yellow to orange coloured flowers that attract butterflies in the garden.
Grow from seeds during late summer to fall in tropical to sub tropical countries and during early spring in hilly or temperate regions.
Well drained soil mixed with moderate amount of organic matter. Prepare potting mix with 60% garden soil + 20% river sand + 10% organic compost + 10% neem cake fertilizer.
Broadcast seeds on a pot filled with potting mix, cover with thin layer of potting mix, apply water, keep in indirect sunlight, within a week seedlings will emerge.
4 to 6 hours of direct bright sunlight daily is necessary for good growth of calendula. But keep under indirect sunlight if temperature is too high.
They can tolerate draught but not over watering. Apply water only when top layer of soil seems dry. Waterlogging can damage plant roots.
Fertilize with one handful of leaf compost or dung manure along with onion peel fertilizer once after every 30 days. Avoid adding nitrogen rich fertilizers only.
