agriculture review

El Niño is known as the "Little Boy" in Spanish. For the first time in 1600, South American fishermen noticed waves of unusually warm water in the Pacific Ocean.
Due to the El Niño effect, the Pacific jet stream moves south and spreads to the east. It causes unusual weather conditions that lead to drought and floods.
According to the United States Weather Agency Climate Prediction Center, there is a 95% chance that the El Nino effect will continue from January to March, 2024.
Hence, it is expected that winter is going to be warmer than usual and there will be scarce or very little rainfall in the region.
Agriculture contributes about 19.9% of India's GDP and India is one of the major producers of grains, fruits, vegetables, milk, meat, eggs, etc. in the world.
Hence, changes in usual temperature and scarcity of water can seriously affect the agricultural production in the country.
To be prepared, farmers should focus on adopting efficient irrigation practices such as drip and cultivating drought-resistant crop varieties.
