It is a series of agricultural innovations & initiatives implemented to increase agricultural production and achieve food security
India faced famines & food shortages in the past, therefore to boost agricultural production to meet the growing food demands, there was a need for green revolution.
To reduce dependence on food imports & become self-sufficient in meeting its food requirements various steps were taken by the Indian government.
By increasing agricultural productivity & farm incomes, it aimed to reduce poverty among rural communities & educate them.
The use of high-yielding varieties (HYVs) of seeds, along with the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides increased. Although it helped in increasing production but had adverse effects too.
M.S. Swaminathan, who is an Indian agronomist, scientist, plant geneticist, etc. is regarded as the Father of the Green Revolution in India for his contributions.
He helped in the development of high-yielding hybrid varieties of seeds & promoting the use of fertilizers among farmers in India.
