Mel Bartholomew, an engineer & expert gardener, invented the square foot gardening method. After retiring at 42, he started gardening & found a better way.
In 1981, he made his gardening method public by publishing his book "Square Foot Gardening."
In this gardening method, he advised creating gardening beds of 4 feet by 4 feet. Divide these gardening beds into square grids of 1 foot. In each grid sow 1 seed.
For creating gardening beds, prepare 6 inches raised beds and fill a mixture of compost, vermiculite and peat moss in beds.
By practicing square-foot gardening, you can get a higher yield because of high-intensity planting. Because of high-intensity planting growth of weeds gets reduced.
Even beginners can practice this gardening method easily, and as lesser space is used, it requires low maintenance.
Initial set up cost is high. Building a raised bed requires capital. And the depth mentioned to create raised beds is not sufficient for root vegetables or bottle gourd, etc.
